I live about 35 miles from the dealership and have to go through a winding mountain pass road to get home. Boy, did that Road Glide cut through the wind. I really loved the way she handled that road. Everything but the speaker system was great, especially the six speed!
By now, I?m about 4 miles from home and the only thing between me and home was a narrow 2-lane country road. I pull up to the stop sign... stop... look both ways, and proceed down the country road on my way home to show my buddies my new toy.
I shift through the gears, and I get up to about 50mph . At this particular time, there?s no one on the road but me and another car which is coming towards me.
I never really liked this road. The speed limit was 55, and in my opinion, was way too fast for a road that was this narrow. Anyhow, as we were getting closer to approaching one another, I thought I?d move more into the center of my lane just to be safe.
Just a moment before we started to pass one another, this guy makes a quick swerve into my lane like he was trying to avoid a pot hole or something and... before I could try to avoid him BANG!... he hits me.
I felt this hard thud-like feeling as I struggled to keep the bike upright. I regain control of the bike wondering what the hell had just happened. I look over my left shoulder and see this guy pulling over to stop on the side of the road. I start to downshift to slow down to see what the hell had just happened. But, I couldn?t feel anything in my leg. I look down to find my foot turned around backwards with my toes pointing in the opposite direction and both bones in my lower leg were sticking out through my shin.
I grabbed a handful of throttle and hauled ass towards home. I figured if I stayed at the scene, chances of getting help in a timely manner were slim. I knew if I could make it home, someone in my neighborhood would be able to call 9-1-1.
When I got to my street, I began laying on the horn repeatedly hoping someone would come outside to see what was going on. Next thing I remember, I heard helicopter rotors and then everything went black.
I woke up in the ICU the next day to find out that I had almost bled-out, losing ¾ of my blood. I had shattered my lower leg and all the bones in my foot. I had nearly ripped off my foot and they had to reattach it. I was pretty lucky in a sense that I could?ve lost my leg completely and been ejected off the bike.
I was in the hospital for a month, endured 5 surgeries and just now beginning to get around without a wheelchair. The accident happened on August 15th.
Luckily, everything will heal up eventually. I may not be able to walk the same, but at least its still attached and I?ll be back on my bike just as soon as I can get it back together. BTW... $13k damage to the bike.

E' vero Ale, lo dice anche il manuale di istruzioni:
The front and/or rear guard(s) can provide limited leg and cosmetic vehicle protection under unique circumstances (fall over whilst stopped, very slow speed slide). It is not made or intended to provide protection from bodily injury in a collision with another vehicle or any other object.
